Breast augmentation Surgery - Risk
Mammoplasty, or breast augmentation surgery, is relatively common, and fairly straightforward as surgery goes, but it is still surgery, which means there are risks. Here are some of the risks you should be aware of, before you have breast implants.

Capsular Contracture occurs when the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten, or contract. This constriction will force the filling of the implants forward, and the breast will feel hard, rather than malleable, to the touch. It is generally treated by either removing or scoring the scar tissue, but sometimes requires removal and replacement of the implants.

Excessive Bleeding is a risk with any surgical procedure, and may cause swelling and plain. Some bleeding is normal, but if it doesn't stop further surgery will be necessary to stop the flow of blood and remove any that has collected where it shouldn't be.

Infection around the implant happens in a very small percentage of women, and usually makes its appearance within the first week after surgery. Treatment may require that the implant be removed until the infection is cleared, and replaced with a new one, afterward.

Nipple Sensitivity will fluctuate after surgery. Some women report over-sensitivity, while others complain of too little sensitivity, or even numbness, which can also be experienced near the incisions. These symptoms usually fade over time, but in some patients they can be permanent.

Breast Feeding and Pregnancy are not usually affected by a woman having implants, but you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon anyway, because there will be changes to your body that may affect placement. There is no health hazard to your baby if you breast feed while having implants.

Breaking and Leakage don't happen often, but ruptures can occur if you are injured, or even from normal activity. Saline implants will deflate, if ruptured, and the salt water will be absorbed by your body, and expelled naturally, while leaks in silicone implants may not even be noticeable without looking. It is vitally important that annual visits to your plastic surgeon be maintained, to protect yourself from an undetected leak.

Mammograms can be affected by breast implants. Specifically, the machines may not read your breast health correctly. It's important to be very honest with your mammogram technician, and let them know you have implants before they do anything. An ultrasound or MRI may be required as an alternative to the standard machine.

While it is rare for serious health issue to arise from breast augmentation surgery, these risks are still very real. Make sure you discuss all of them with your plastic surgeon before you commit to the surgery, and afterwards, make sure you trust your body. If anything feels wrong, call your doctor immediately.
